minimalism
/ˈmɪnɪməˌlɪz(ə)m/
noun
1. a movement in sculpture and painting which arose in the 1950s, characterized by the use of simple, massive forms.
Millennials currently live a neo-minimalism era. It is not because we don’t want to buy and use things, it is because we don’t have money to buy and time to spend. We live in times that borders are getting tighter, cultural mixing is increasing, countries are getting poorer, banks are getting richer. Millennials have less while they were raised being used in more. Young people tend to create a trend out of their current condition. Having less, buying less could be trendy. Doing less, thinking less. Millennials prefer to live experiences rather than owning stuff. Owning is passé. Is this the end of a strongly routed economic system, is it just another trend or a pure adaptation to recession? You can shop here but where are you going to store your shopping? Does your twenty square meter minimalist decorated studio have enough space for your belongings? And what are you going to do with your shopping when you move again. You are a traveler, you are a new-age nomad. You don’t need more than two t-shirts, a sweater, two jeans and a Mac. Better grow your own plant which you will sell to the next tenant when moving out again. You don’t need a car, better get a rented bike. You don’t need space, better go for yoga. Meditate to forget that you don’t have space, you don’t have a good salary, you don’t have time. But you don’t need to. You are a millennial, you are a neo-minimalist nomad.
