In Heraklion, Crete, on a plot of approximately 1.5 acres near the sea, we were tasked with designing a non-primary tourist accommodation with a total area of 168 sq.m.
With hospitality holding a prominent place in Cretan culture, we proposed creating a small "village" of three residences—each a 56 sq.m. studio with full functional autonomy and a private pool.
The plot's almost flat terrain does not offer significant sea views, so we opted to design a cluster of volumes arranged to create semi-open spaces with varying degrees of privacy. This idea of clustered small volumes inspired the project’s name, Lithoi ("Stones").
Each studio consists of an open-plan kitchen-living-bedroom area, a bathroom, and a loft that can serve as a second bedroom. Additionally, each unit features a private pool and a semi-open space that evokes the feeling of a ground-floor courtyard. The individual courtyards are visually separated by walls made of natural local stone and plantings. Pergolas cover the courtyards and studio entrances, providing sun protection during the hot summer months.
The exterior volumes are clad with thermal insulation finished in a textured warm-toned paint. Inspiration for the design came from the Venetian wall of Heraklion and the old town, where ochre tones and natural stone dominate.
The Lithoi complex, inspired by Cretan hospitality and the historical character of Heraklion, introduces a new concept of holiday living. It fosters a sense of belonging and familiarity while connecting visitors to nature, local colours, and materials, offering a novel hospitality experience.
*The project remained in the preliminary study due to budget limitations.
